BIBL 466 – REVELATION

SYLLABUS

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course presents an exegetical study in the John’s letter to the Seven Churches of Asia, commonly known simply as Revelation.

The course will begin with an introduction to Revelation, its historical, literary and theological context.

The course will proceed through a verse by verse study of the text in which the text will be interpreted in its historical, literary, and theological context.

An attempt will be made to understand the theological message of Revelation in its original context, and to make application of that theological message to contemporary situations.

We will examine attempts to interpret Revelation through the ages, and to propose a biblical hermeneutic that maintains the integrity of the original text. 

COURSE METHODOLOGY:

The course will be a lecture class with discussion built into the lectures.

Reading of the textbook will be necessary for competent discussion.

Several links to web pages are included to enrich the student’s learning process.

Reading Assignments:

  • The Book of Revelation must be read through twice, once before the course begins.

Final Exam:

  • There will be a Final Exam over the course on the last day of the course.
  • The Final Exam will include on matching question, several essay questions, one of which will be a major integrative theological question.

COURSE GOALS:
The student will be:

  • Introduced to the literary genre (type) of Revelation and Apocalyptic.
  • Introduced to the literary background of Revelation.
  • Led through a detailed verse by verse study of Revelation and be able to discuss the relevance of Revelation for contemporary life and ministry.
  • Able to articulate the theology of Revelation.
  • The student will be able to discourse meaningfully on the content, theology, and relevance of Revelation.

OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT
Student learning and comprehension of the content and theology of the course will be measured by discussion, a final exam, and a major integrative question on the final exam.

THEOLOGICAL REFLECTION QUESTION ON FINAL EXAM

As a component of the final exam a major question will relate to integrating the theology of Revelation into pand ministry.

GRADES AND GRADING POLICY
The final grade will be an average of the reflective paper grade and the final examination grade. 
     A = 90%+ Excellent work
     B = 80%+ Good work
     C = 70%+ Acceptable work
     D = 60%+ Poor work
     F = 59%- Failing work

COURSE SCHEDULE:

Monday: Orientation and Introduction

Tuesday: Structure and Rev 1-3

Wednesday: Rev 4-11

Thursday: Rev 12-18

Friday: Rev 19-22, Final Exam

CLASS ATTENDANCE AND GRADING:

  1. Class attendance is required at all classes.  Absence from a morning or afternoon session will result in the loss of on letter grade on the final grade.
  2. The professor will not regrade a final exam unless there are extenuating circumstances calling for this.  The professor will determine the extenuating circumstances.
  3. No makeup work for improving a grade will be permitted.
  4. Students using cell phones for any purpose during class for any reason will have their final grade lowered by one letter grade.  No exception!
  5. Likewise students texting and sending e-mail or receiving text and e-mail messages during class will have their final grade lowered by one letter grade.
