LEADERSHIP TASK

The following two charts explain leadership tasks and leadership function.
They examine what it is that Leaders provide a group in a Participative Leadership Model.

THE LEADERSHIP'S TASK
In a Participative Leadership Model it is the leadership's task to:
1. Promote the groups Values
This does not mean that the leader determines the values.
The group's values have already been participatively determined.
2. Promote Vision
The leadership must have a challenging vision for the group.
This vision must be promoted (sold) by the leadership.
Effective, clear communication of values and vision is imperative.
The vision must be clear and attainable.
3. Create and Environment for Success
Success cannot be achieved in an environment that is not conducive to growth.
Leadership must be responsible for an optimistic environment in which trust is apparent.
4. Equip Followers
Leadership must make every effort to see that followers are equipped for their tasks.
It is a fundamental task of leadership to equip and train followers.
5. Organize and Energize Followers
Although organization is a function of management, leaders must see that their followers are organized for success.
Followers must be nurtured and encouraged for the tasks they are given.
Followers must be assured that the tasks are within their ability and that they can and will succeed.
Motivation is a primary factor in successful leadership.
 


WHAT LEADERS PROVIDE
As indicated in the chart below, there are several factors that impact Participative Leadership>
Leaders must evidence and lead by:

While all of the above factors are important to successful participative leadership, the following must be given careful attention:

1. Trust
Leaders must trust their followers
Followers must trust their leaders.
Trust must be earned.
2. Effective Feedback
Prompt, complete, and reliable feedback and communication is essential.
Suspicion of manipulation will destroy trust and effective leadership.
3. Accountability
Every member of the group or team must be accountable to the group and team.
Freedom to operate without strict control must be balanced by responsibility.
Accountability must be managed so that it does not become control.
