BAPTISM

This study on
Baptism is in two forms:
1. An Introductory Lesson
This is an introductory study for those who do not need an advanced
study at
this time. Students are
encouraged, however, at some point to refer to the
advanced study.
Students of BIBL 301 will be required to take a test over the
advanced study.
2.
An Advanced Lesson
This is a detailed study of the Doctrine of Baptism, and is required for
students of BIBL 301. Students
of BIBL 301 will be tested over this material.
3. Baptism Conclusions.
Click on either one of the above to go to that study.
Brief Bibliography:
The three Bible Dictionaries cited in
this study are a good beginning point for examining the doctrine of
baptism in the New Testament and its subsequent practice in the
Christian tradition:
The Anchor Bible Dictionary
Baker's Dictionary of Theology
A Dictionary of Christian Theology
The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible
An excellent study of baptism by a noted Baptist scholar is a
necessary resource for a study of baptism:
G. R. Beasley-Murray, Baptism in the New
Testament, 1962
We recommend the monumental study of Baptism by Everett Ferguson,
Baptism in the Early Church: History, Theology, and Liturgy in the First
Five Centuries, 2009.
See also Jack Cottrell, Baptism: A Biblical
Study, 2000.
There are several articles in the Restoration Quarterly, a
scholarly journal, that address several topics on Baptism. See Restoration
Quarterly, Vol. 43/2, 2001. For the sake of easy reference,
these articles are listed below (I hope
shortly to have these digitized and as links on the Internet Web.
Those highlighted in Yellow are linked to the article in question.).
