40 Days With Moses
Introduction to the Study
This material was developed for
a special period of prayer in my local congregation in Bayfield,
Colorado, as we prepared for the arrival of our new preaching minister and his
wife.
The material can be
adapted to any situation in which special prayers are in order.
The 40 days begins on a Sunday during a
worship assembly and continues daily through 40 days in which members of
the congregation either gather at specific locations for prayer or in
their homes with their families.
May God bless your prayers!
__________________________________________________________________________
Day One – Sunday Worship
Service
Suggestions for the service
Have Elder/Leader serve
as the Master of Ceremonies, that is, call the assembly to worship and
lead the service!
Encourage the men (insist!) that they stay
with the topic and keep their prayers to the point and short. Long all
inclusive prayers will break up the emphases and flow of thought.
Have announcements at the end of the service.
Opening Prayer – Elder/Leader–
Prayer of special thanks to God for the congregation, for the spiritual
home God has provided for us.
Opening Hymn
– Song Leader- A hymn of thanksgiving, possibly Oh! Thou Fount
of Every Blessing.
Lord’s Supper – Leader- Focus
on thanksgiving for God’s Great love and the gift of Jesus. Keep the
lesson and prayer within the topic outlined, that is thanksgiving for
God’s great love.
Sermon Lesson for Day One –
Sunday Led by Elder of other Minister
-
As a congregation and as individuals we
are about to enter a special period of prayer as we prepare for the
arrival of (new minister and wife) and our new ministry with them.
-
God has richly blessed this congregation
over the past seventeen years as (previous minister and wife)
ministered with us.
-
We seek God’s rich blessings as we enter a
new period of ministry at (Congregation).
-
We believe God led (new minister and wife)
to us after much prayer that he would find us a minister who would
continue the rich heritage of this congregation.
-
We will be praying that our (ministry
team) will develop into a powerful team as they lead us in ministry,
and that together with the ministry of our elders and deacons we
will be spiritually strengthened.
-
We have chosen to call this period of
spiritual preparation 40 Days With Moses for 40 days of
spiritual preparation in Scripture is a powerful symbol of spiritual
strength and blessing.
40 days represents a period of intense
spiritual or religious experience.
- At Gen 7:4 and the following chapter we read of God bringing a
flood on the earth in Noah’s day to cleanse it and prepare for a new
spiritual beginning for his creation. "For in seven days I will
send rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and
every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of
the ground."
- Later at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry he was led into the
desert by the Holy Spirit to prepare him for the serious spiritual
battle and temptation by Satan. Lk 4:1, 2, "And
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was
led by the Spirit 2 for forty days in the
wilderness, tempted by the devil."
Mk 1:13, "And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan;
and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him."
- At Acts 1:3 we read of Jesus commissioning his apostles. During
the period following his resurrection for 40 days he prepared his
disciples for this mission, ‘In the first book, O Theophilus, I
have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2
until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment
through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3
To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many
proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of
the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he
charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the
promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me, 5
for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall
be baptized with the Holy Spirit."’
What is 40 Days
With Moses?
- At Exodus 24:18 we read that Moses went up into Mt Sinai to
receive instructions from God, "And Moses entered the cloud,
and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty
days and forty nights."
- During this period Israel sinned and built the golden calf which
resulted in Moses breaking the two tables of stone on which God had
written the ten commandments. God refused to go with Israel into the
promised land. Moses prayed three prayers in which he interceded for
Israel. God "relented" and said he would accompany Moses and Israel
into the promised land. This reminds one of the statement in James
5:16, "The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its
effects."
- We are going to be praying that God will go with us into this
year and bless us as a congregation in the ministry of (new minister
and wife).
40 Days at (Name of Your
Congregation)
-
The elders feel the need in our
congregation for a time of special and deep spiritual preparation.
-
We are inviting you to join us in the
privacy of your home and family and in fellowship with the elders
and minister at the church building for 40 days of prayer and
scripture reading.
-
This is what we have in mind:
- We are going to provide you with a 40 day schedule for
prayer and Scripture reading. This will not take up a lot of
your time, but we hope you will join us in both efforts.
- Each night one or two of the elders and deacons will be at
the church building to pray and read Scripture. We ask you to
join us as you can. Please make every effort to do so.
- We ask you to join us each night in your home. We recommend
that you gather with your family (or alone if this is the best
for you), read the Scriptures and prayer for the prayer item/s
for that day.

for the saints in Rome and wants to visit them so that they may be
mutually blessed. He reminds them that he is under obligation to preach
the gospel to all people, not only those in Rome (community!). He is
eager to preach the gospel to those in Rome. He obviously hopes that
they will be ready for his preaching and ministry!

work of love, labor of love, and steadfast in our hope and that we may
grow out of our past weaknesses and truly worship and serve God.
______________________________________________________________________

Scripture: Heb 3:1; 4:14-16; 6:1. The writer
of Hebrews encourages his reader to focus their lives on Jesus who is
their great high priest and with confidence draw near to God. He
encourages them to leave behind their immature faith and go on to a
mature faith.

will keep Jesus as the center of our faith and lives, and that with
confidence we will draw near to God and grow into mature Christians.
Pray that our elders, and (ministry team) will

praise to God for his faithfulness. We praise him for his greatness and
salvation. We bow before him and acknowledge him as our Lord king.

and thank him for the salvation we enjoy in Jesus. Pray that through our
ministry others will come to know his greatness and salvation and join
us in worship of our great God and king.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 17 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Psalms 93 and 96. These Psalms
praise God for his majesty and reign over all the world. It acknowledges
God’s omnipotence as creator of all things. It also recognizes that his
word is true, sure, and holy. Psalm 96 honors God for his majesty,
strength, greatness, and righteousness.
Prayer: Pray that we might submit to his
sovereign reign through Jesus and listen to his word. Praise God for his
great creative power and for the fact that we have been recreated in the
image of his son. Pray that we may grow to be more like Jesus each day.
Pray that through our lives we might bring glory to God.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 18 – Scripture and Prayer
Scriptures: 1 Tim 2:1-7 and Rom 13:1-7. In
these two texts Paul encourages the Christians to pray for rulers, and
to honor governmental, ruling, and all authorities. Note 1 Tom 2:4. Paul
acknowledges that God wants all men to be saved. Peace sets an
appropriate environment for evangelism.
Prayer: Pray for our nation as we go
through the process of choosing leaders. Pray that whoever is chosen may
seek God first and his righteousness. Pray for our soldiers all over the
world who protect our peace. Pray that we may use peace for the right
purpose – to further the preaching of the Gospel.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 19 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Psalm 103 is a fairly long
Psalm. Notice how many times the psalmist acknowledges God’s steadfast
love. Note that the NIV translates the Hebrew word hesed or
chesed in Psalm 103:4, 8, 11, 17 simply as love. This is fine
but the word carries a deeper meaning of steadfast love (RSV) or
loyal love (Leslie Allen, Word Commentary on Psalm 103). The
Psalm actually speaks of God’s steadfast love that lasts forever
(Ps 103:17).
Jer 33:11 reads "Give thanks to the Lord of
hosts, for the Lord is good, for his steadfast love endures for ever!"
Hesed (chesed) also speaks of "covenant loyalty or love". It is a
covenant of love, or a promise that God has made to love us regardless
of our weakness.
Prayer: Praise God for his love that
transcends everything especially our weakness and failure. Pray that we
might learn form him how to love one another. Mention one or two people
for whom you wish your love would blossom into a steadfast love that
will not fade away and fail you when you need to love them with a
steadfast love.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 20 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Col 1:9-14, Paul’s greeting
prayer to the church in Colossae.
Here is a sample prayer from church history
that will help you shape our prayer today.
Prayer by Polycarp of Smyrna, approx. 155 AD,
"Now may the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and may Jesus
Christ himself also, the eternal high-priest the Son of God, build you
up in faith and truth, and in gentleness, avoidance of anger,
forbearance , long suffering, patient endurance and purity; and may he
grant you to inherit a place among his saints; may he grant this to us
also so that we may be with you, and to everyone under heaven who will
believe in our Lord Jesus Christ and in his Father who raised him from
the dead."
Prayer: Pray that God will fill you with
grace and all the good works that you know he wants you to have. Pray
that he may fill you with spiritual wisdom and understanding.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 21 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Matt 6:9-14, What we call the
Lord’s Prayer. Notice in particular vs. 11-13. In the Jewish tradition
the daily bread meant spiritual food.
A Syrian Orthodox Christian model prayer for
spiritual food – "Holy Father, keep us in your truth; holy Son,
protect us under the wings of your cross; Holy Spirit, make us temple
and dwelling places for our glory; grant us your peace all the days of
our lives, O Lord."
Prayer: As in this prayer, pray that God
would keep us in truth, that we would be protected by the power of
Jesus’ cross, and that we may be filled by the holy Spirit to truly be
spiritual people. Pray for spiritual food from God that will keep us
form harm and temptation, and strengthen us daily.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 22 – Worship – Scripture and Prayer
Special scriptures and prayers for the worship
service. The focus of the prayers and scriptures are on praising God for
his great power, majesty, and salvation. We give thanks to God for Jesus
and the salvation and fellowship we enjoy because of God’s steadfast
love.
Scriptures: Psalm 98:1-3; Psalm 100; Psalm
105:1-8
Prayer: Pray special prayers that focus on
god’s greatness, steadfast love, and salvation we enjoy. Pray that God
will give us the strength to be his special servants and witness in the
(community) area, and throughout the world.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 23 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Rom 8:26, 27 – We sometimes do
not know how or what to pray. We can have confidence that the Holy
Spirit will work with us and take our prayer concerns to God who hears.
The point Paul is making is that Christians struggling with life are not
alone, Jesus is with us, the Holy Spirit is involved, and God is working
in our lives.
Note the prayer of Cyprian of Carthage,
approx. AD 258. "Good God. May we confess your name to the end. May
we emerge unsullied and glorious from the traps and dark powers of this
world. As you have bound us together in love and peace, and as,
together, we have persevered through times of hardship, may we also
rejoice together in your heavenly kingdom."
Prayer: Pray that God, who has been
faithful through the ages will be with us today in the trials and
difficulties we encounter, some health problems, others family
difficulties, and personal struggles.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 24 – Scripture and Prayer
Scriptures: Three Scriptures reflect the
prayer concerns of Paul.
Eph 6:18 – Paul encouraged the saints at
Ephesus to pray at all times. He encouraged them to pray that the
message he preached may be preached with boldness.
1 Thess 5:16-19 – Paul encouraged the
Christians at Thessalonica to pray all the time in all circumstances,
for this is the will of God. He encouraged tem to not quench the Spirit
implying that at times they could do so. Pray that we do not hinder the
working of the Spirit in the lives of people, especially in their
conversion and new birth.
2 Thess 3:1 – He encouraged the Christians at
Thessalonica also to pray that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly
and be glorified and that many would be saved.
Prayer: Pray that we do not become a
hindrance to God’s working in the lives of other y our actions. Pray
that we not become guilty of hindering the working of the Holy Spirit in
people’s lives. Pray that the word of God may spread rapidly in our area
of (community) and that God will use us and (new minister) to be his
agents of change.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 25 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture – Rom 12:1, 2 – Paul encourages
the Christians in Rome to present their lives to God as a living
sacrifice which is holy and acceptable to God. He emphasizes that this
is your every day spiritual worship. Part of our living sacrifice
to God is the sacrifice of prayer.
The following are some interesting thoughts on
prayer.
Prayer must become the foundation of our
Christian life and experience, the source of our relationship with Jesus
as our Savior and with God our heavenly Father. Prayer means much more
than being led in prayers on Sunday morning and the brief experience of
reciting, in a mechanical fashion, short prayers at night which we once
learned by rote memory during childhood.
The Prayers of Paul.
We have on occasion looked at the prayers of
Paul reflected in the prayer section of his letters to the different
churches. To the Thessalonian church he wrote that they should "pray
without ceasing" (1 Thess. 5:1). In his letter to the saints in Rome he
encouraged them to "be constant in prayer" (Rom. 12:12). This was not
something he encouraged in the abstract for it was his own practice. He
told the Christians in Thessalonica that he and Timothy "constantly
thank God for you" (1 Thess. 2:13). He comforted and encouraged Timothy
his "true child in the faith" (1 Tim. 1:2) by emphasizing that he
"always remembered him in his prayers" (2 Tim. 1:3). In fact, whenever
Paul spoke of prayer in his letters he repeatedly used two Greek words
to make his point. The first is pantote which means always.
The second is for Paul the important prayer word adialeptos which
means without interruption or unceasingly. Prayer is not
merely a part of life which we use by habit or when we get into trouble
or need help. It should be an important part of our relationship with
God as our Father. Prayer is as essential to our spiritual life as
breathing is to our physical life.
This raises some interesting questions and
challenging issues! What does Paul mean when he encourages Christians to
pray all the time? We are, after all, very busy people caught up with
the everyday pressures of life. Our work demands our attention and makes
heavy demands on our time and energy. Our family responsibilities with
our spouse and our children keep us running around in whatever time we
have left over from our works day. And church work places demands upon
our "spiritual time" and effort. Then there is recreation which is also
important to both our physical and spiritual emotional lives! How can we
fit more time for extended or constant prayer into our already
overcrowded lives? These questions and the many others like them suggest
that possibly the best time for prayer is just before we close out the
day in sleep, or when we are gathered together in congregational worship
and Bible study. To pray constantly does not mean that we think about
God at special times in contrast to thinking about Him when we are at
work or spending time with our family and friends. Rather, praying
without ceasing also involves thinking and living our everyday life
in the presence of God and Jesus, and always living our lives in a
special relationship with them throughout the day in the power of the
indwelling Holy Spirit. Prayer involves living a Spirit filled life and
"walking by the spirit? (Gal 5:16). This means that at anytime during
the day or night we it is an easy thing to bring God into our lives with
a thought or word offered because we know He is there and interested in
what we are doing. Our whole life, every act and gesture, even a smile
must become our spiritual worship, an offering of our lives to God, a
prayer or a special relationship with God (Rom 12:1, 2). Our everyday
lives thus become a spiritual sacrifice offered to God, a living
prayer." This is what Paul meant when he wrote to the Corinthians and
Colossians that whatever they did they should do for the glory of God
and in the name of Jesus" (1 Cor. 10:31, Col 3:17).
Prayer: Pray that
prayer will become one of the
living characteristics of our relationship with God and Jesus that
demonstrates our spiritual worship of God every day. Pray that prayer
might become part of our holy and pleasing living sacrifice to God. Pray
that God through the Holy Spirit (Rom 8: 26-29) will help our prayers
and be present in our daily living at work and other practical events or
special occasions and responsibilities of life.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 26 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Matt 20:29-34 – Two blind men
learned that Jesus was passing by. They cried out for Jesus to have
mercy on them. Read this text,
And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. 30
And behold, two blind men sitting by the roadside, when they heard
that Jesus was passing by, cried out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"
31 The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent; but
they cried out the more, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"
32 And Jesus stopped and called them, saying, "What do you want
me to do for you?" 33 They said to him, "Lord, let our
eyes be opened." 34 And Jesus in pity touched their
eyes, and immediately they received their sight and followed him.
Notice the words that
are underlined. This has specific meaning since the blind men who could
not see began to see, but the Pharisees and Scribes who could see, were
in fact blind in regard to Jesus.
Prayer:
Pray that we not be like the
religious people of Jesus day who were blind to Jesus. Pray that Jesus
might open our eyes to spiritual riches we have in him and God. Pray for
insight into his word and purpose for our lives and the life of the
congregation in (community).
______________________________________________________________________
Day 27 – Scripture and Prayer
Scriptures: Mk 1:35-39; Luke 6:12; Luke
22:39.
There are
many references to Jesus prayer
life in the gospels. He prayed often. He prayed early in the morning,
for special ministries, late at night, and sometimes all through the
night. He prayed before big decisions like calling the apostles, and at
critical times like just before his arrest, trial, and crucifixion.
Note: Mark 1:35-39 ;
And in the morning, a great while before day, he rose and went out to a
lonely place, and there he prayed. 36 And Simon and those
who were with him pursued him, 37 and they found him and
said to him, "Every one is searching for you." 38 And he
said to them, "Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there
also; for that is why I came out." 39 And he went
throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out
demons.
Luke 6:12, In these days
he went out to the mountain to pray; and all night he continued in
prayer to God.
Luke 5:16,
But he withdrew to the
wilderness and prayed.
Luke 22:39,
And he came out, and went, as was his custom, to the Mount
of Olives; and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he
came to the place he said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into
temptation." 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s
throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 "Father, if thou art
willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but thine,
be done." 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the
disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he
said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter
into temptation."
Jesus prayed before critical events in His
life.
He prayed as He ministered to others.
And he prayed for others.
Prayer: Pray that God would help us to see
the need for prayer at every moment or event of our lives, and
especially on special occasions and for special ministries and purposes.
Pray that we become people known all around (community) for our prayer
life for the community.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 28 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Phil 1:3-11. The Philippian
church and Paul had enjoyed a long standing and good relationship.
Apparently their spiritual zeal was flagging and Paul wrote to encourage
them. In this text Paul lets them know that they are constantly on his
mind. And in his prayers. He prays that they might have joy in their
spiritual life, that God would bring their faith to maturity in Christ
and that their love may abound more and more in knowledge and
discernment, and that they may be filled with the fruits of
righteousness (that is the fruits that come form a good relationship
with Jesus). He reminds them that they had been partakers with him in
the grace of ministry.
Prayer: Pray that God will bless us with
knowledge and understanding and that we may be filled with the fruits of
ministry. Pray that our ministry of grace that we have enjoyed for years
with (previous minister) may continue and that we may also have a
fruitful ministry together with (new minister). Pray that we may so live
that our ministry together is one of joy and one that will bring glory
to God and Jesus.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 29 – Worship – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture:
James 5:13-18,
"Is any one among you
suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14
Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church,
and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the
Lord; 15 and the prayer of faith will save the sick man,
and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be
forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another,
and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a
righteous man has great power in its effects. 17 Elijah was
a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that it
might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on
the earth. 18 Then he prayed again and the heaven gave
rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit."
This is one of the great prayer texts of the
New Testament. But is also one of the most abused or misunderstood! We
must first set it briefly in its proper context. It comes at the
conclusion of James’ letter and summarizes much of the wisdom and
practical emphases of the letter. James encourages prayers for
several aspects of Christian living. 1) Suffering in general, 2) joy, 3)
illness, and 4) sin and forgiveness. The anointing with oil is
ceremonial and part of the Jewish culture associated with prayer and
spiritual needs. In true Jewish custom James encourages calling on the
elders of the church to lead in prayer. The major point of the
discussion is on the power of prayer offered in faith, that is in the
proper relationship with God and Jesus. Using the relationship of Elijah
with God James stressed that the prayer of a righteous person has great
power in its working. This does not mean that God will always do what we
ask or want, but stresses that God hears our prayers and in his own will
and way answers those prayers. We must be willing to wait patiently for
God knowing that he has heard and will act in our behalf in the best and
most appropriate way. We pray in hope, faith, and confidence and leave
the rest to God to sort out. Being a righteous God he will do what is
best and right.
Prayer:
Pray that God will help us in our prayer
concerns and that he will act in our best interests. Pray that he will
increase our faith and help us to understand his will. Pray that God
will help us to live close to him and Jesus (that is in the right way or
simply an attitude of righteousness. Righteousness does not mean living
perfectly or always getting it right, but means living in t a right
relationship with god and Jesus and their will for us.) Pray that in our
new ministry with Ray and Sandy that we will be empowered by God to
bring glory to him and Jesus in our work and ministry in (congregation)
and in our mission efforts. Pray that he will bring joy to our church
life and ministry and witness for him.

Day 30 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Matt 6:5-15 and Luke 11:1-4.
Both of these two Scriptures deal with what we
commonly call the Lord’s prayer. In Luke he explains that Jesus’
disciples had asked him to teach them to pray. Matthew sets this in the
context of the Sermon on the Mount in which Jesus taught his disciples
the meaning of discipleship. Disciples do not make a show of prayer as
was the practice of many of the Jews. Jesus taught them to pray
privately. This does not mean that we should not pray in public as in
worship, but it does stress that we should not make a show of prayer.
Since this prayer instruction was given by Jesus to Jewish disciples I
want to place the prayer in the context of Jewish understanding. The
prayer is based on common prayer practices of Jews especially the
prayers of the Synagogue. The prayer begins with praise of God and his
holiness and extends to the spiritual needs of the ones praying. We tend
to focus our prayers on our physical needs as in praying for the healing
of those who are sick and in need of physical help. This is fine, but
our prayers should focus more on our spiritual needs and spiritual food.
The phrase "give is our daily bread" is difficult to translate from the
Greek but should stress our daily spiritual needs for spiritual food or
"bread". This is how a Jewish disciple would have thought.
Prayer: "God we praise you and your holy
name (being). We praise you for your great power in heaven and on earth.
We ask that your will and reign (kingdom) will be experienced in our
lives and world just as they are experienced in heaven. Please
strengthen us daily with spiritual food that we may live to bring you
glory in our lives and community. Please protect us from sin and evil
and lead us in the way you would have us go and live. Please lead us in
the way of righteousness. Please forgive us when we fail you and sin
(our spiritual debts) and help us to forgive those who act in ways that
we do not like or appreciate."

Day 31 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Psalm 139. This is a psalm of
praise to God for His greatness. It is in 4 sections. 1) Praise God for
his omniscience. He know everything, even the innermost portions of our
heart – he has searched us and knows our heart and thoughts and knows
all about us. His knowledge is too wonderful for our comprehension.
2) He is omnipresent – He is everywhere. You cannot escape from his
presence which is encouraging as well as sobering! Wherever we are he is
able to lead us because he has already been there and is there. 3) He is
the powerful God of creation. He knew us before we were born. His
thoughts are precious to us – we want to hear his thoughts! 4)
Concluding thoughts – a prayer for the ungodly, those who do not know
God. A prayer that God would search us, guide us, and lead us in the way
to everlasting life.
Prayer: Praise God for his great knowledge
and power. Praise him for having created us and for brining us into his
family. Thanks him for his salvation in Jesus and ask that he always
lead us into a deeper relationship with him. Pray that God will lead the
congregation into greater strength and blessings as we prepare for (new
minister) arrival and new ministry with us. Pray that the congregation
will be faithful to Jesus and his word and purpose for the congregation.
Pray that God who knows all about us will reveal to us and lead us into
areas where we need strengthening.

Day 32 – Wednesday Devotional - Scripture and
Prayer
Focus praising God for his faithfulness.
Songs: Sing two songs praising God for his
salvation and greatness.
Scripture: Psalm 138. Matt 6:25-33. Read
the whole Psalm and Matt 6:25-33 to the congregation. In this psalm
David acknowledges and praises God for his faithfulness. He sings God’s
praises. Twice (vss. 2 and 8) David praises God for his faithful and
steadfast love which endures forever. He acknowledges that God is high
yet in spite of this he remembers the lowly.
Prayer: Praise God who is holy and
righteous, and the sovereign ruler of the world. Praise him for the fact
that he has not forgotten us who do not deserve his love and attention
and yet he has saved us. Thank him for the way he has led this
congregation in the past and pray that we will continue to let him lead
us into righteousness in the future. Pray that he will help us not to
focus our lives on the physical but rather on his will and reign in our
lives.

Day 32 – Scripture and Prayer
Scriptures: Psalm 148 and 149:1-6, we know
Psalm 148 well since we sing it fairly regularly!
Hymn: "Praise the Lord, ye heavens adore
Him!" Either read this hymn or of there are enough singers present, sing
it together!
Prayer: Praise and thank God for the
greatness and majesty of his creation. Acknowledge our finite
weakness and nature on comparison to his awesome nature.
Confess our weakness and sins and ask for his
forgiveness and strength. Pray for his extended grace to reach into our
lives and help us to be the people he would have us be.

Day 33 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Rev 5:6-14. This great text is
what Revelation, and life, are all about! It reveals that Jesus holds
the key to God’s plan of salvation and for redeeming his creation. Jesus
is worthy (vs. 9) because he died for us and has made God’s plan a
reality. He is worthy of all praise. Note vss. 12, 13. John lists seven
reasons for praising Jesus; his power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor,
glory, and blessing. All heaven joins in the hymn of praise to Jesus.
Prayer: Praise and thank God for his great
plan of salvation and for the fact that he has saved us by his grace
through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Thank Jesus for
his faithfulness which came at an awful price. Acknowledge that Jesus is
the king of God’s kingdom and of our lives. Pray that we may learn from
Jesus’ example of faithfulness to be as faithful to God’s purpose as was
Jesus. Pray that our lives will bring glory, honor, and blessing to
Jesus and that we may in turn receive power, might, and wisdom in our
lives in order to overcome Satan and sin. Pray that we like Jesus my
become instruments of God’s great plan of salvation and that through our
ministry God and Jesus will be praised in all creation.

Day 34 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Psalm 147. A psalm of praise
for God’s mighty works and grace. Vss. 1-6 - The psalmist praises God
for his mighty works in history that result in God’s people’s salvation.
Think of Noah, Abraham, Joseph, and Moses, and how god worked through
them to bring about his purpose of salvation. Vss. 7-11 - The psalmist
then praises God who is the sustainer of life. Think about Israel in the
wilderness. Think about and praise God for the gift his Holy Spirit he
has given to us to comfort and strengthen us daily. Pray that we might
grow in grace and spiritual strength. Vss. 12-20 – Israel (God’s people,
this would refer to us, the church, today) is encouraged to praise God
for the strength and peace he brings to us into our lives (through
Jesus). The psalmist is grateful for God’s word and the power of that
word. Thank God that he has given us his word, that he has spoken to us,
that he loves us enough to communicate with us and guide us to eternal
life. Pray that we might be faithful to God’s word.

Day 35 – Worship – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture Reading and Comment: Elder/Leader -
2 Cor 1:3-5 (NIV)
" Praise be to the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all
comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we
can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have
received from God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ
flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows."
Comment to the Congregation: Elder/Leader
- Today we are thinking of the many of our family and congregation who
are struggling with illness or other personal problems. We are also
thinking about those in our military or services who are protecting our
nation from harm. Pray that God will look kindly (be compassionate) on
us and provide us with the kind of help, strength, and protection he
feels are appropriate to our needs. Pray for comfort and healing for our
sick and strength for those who feel the need for help.
Prayer: Suggestions: Ask
Elder/Leader to lead a prayer for our young people in the
congregation and the community of Bayfield and Ignacio. Ask
Elder/Leader to lead special prayer for our military,
Elder/Leader for those who are hurting spiritually and emotionally,
and Elder/Leader to pray especially for (those who are sick), and
others who are struggling with health problems.

Day 36 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Lk 11:5-13; "keep on
asking…seeking…knocking…," Gen 32:24-30, "And Jacob was left
alone; and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.
25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he
touched the hollow of his thigh; and Jacob’s thigh was put out of joint
as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, "Let me go, for
the day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you
bless me." 27 And he said to him, "What is your name?" And
he said, "Jacob." 28 Then he said, "Your name shall no more
be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men,
and have prevailed." 29 Then Jacob asked him, "Tell me, I
pray, your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And
there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the name of the
place Peniel, saying, "For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life
is preserved."
This is a strange passage of Scripture! Who is
this man that Jacob wrestles with? We simply do not know! But he is a
man of mystery because when Jacob asks him for his name he does not
giver it! Hos 12:4 implies that he was an angel and goes on to include
God in this story! How can Jacob assume he has seen God face to face
because he wrestled with this man? Jacob’s name was changed to Israel
which means "he who strives with God." So what is going on here?
The point is that Jacob would not give up in his striving with God.
He would not let God go! This sort of reminds us of Job who in spite of
all his suffering would not give up on God. Jesus said we should not
give up on God but keep on asking, seeking, and knocking.
Prayer: Pray that God will give us the
kind of faith that will keep us going even when things do not look so
good. Pray that we might be strong in our faith and faithfulness, that
we do not quit on God and his purpose for us. Pray for the strength to
"strive with God" in prayer knowing that he will do what is best for us
even if we do not know what this might be. Pray that our name might be
changed to something like "God is with us" simply because it is
apparent from our lives, conviction, faith, and steadfast hope that God
is with us.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 37 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: 1 Thess 1:2-10. In his greeting
and prayer to the Thessalonian Christians Paul commends them for their
remarkable growth. At the time of writing this letter these Christians
had been Christians for only a few months! Paul attributes their growth
to their work of faith, labor of love, and steadfast
hope in Jesus. They had become imitators of Paul and of Jesus in
their resolve to not give up in suffering. They had turned away from
their former lives (idolatry) to serving a living God. They were waiting
expectantly for Jesus coming.
Prayer: Pray that our works of faith,
labors of love, and steadfast hope in Jesus would continue to grow and
mature, especially under the teaching and ministry of (ministry team).
Pray that it will be apparent to all that our lives have changed and
that we have turned from our past lives (controlled by the world, hence
a form of worldly idolatry) to actively serving a true and living God.
Pray for our newer and younger members that they would grow in their
faith, love, and hope in Jesus.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 38 – Wednesday Devotional - Scripture and
Prayer
Scripture: Have someone who can read well
reads these Scriptures during the devotional, Heb 3:1-6; 4:14-16;
13:8. The writer of the letter we call Hebrews encourages his readers
never to give up on their faith in God and Jesus. Too often we let the
pressures of the world creep in and push our faith almost outside our
lives. We need to keep our faith and lives fixed on Jesus, our high
priest, who is always there for us, and always the same, yesterday,
today, and tomorrow.
Prayer: Have different men lead in
special prayers. Pray for our elders, deacons, ministers, and
special servants (secretaries, bible class teachers, custodians). Pray
for our young people. Pray for our older folk. Pray that we never loose
sight of Jesus and allow things to come before him in our lives.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 39 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: 2 Thess 1:3-10. Paul commends
the Thessalonian Christians for their steady growth and love for one
another. He prays that they may grow to be worthy of the kingdom (reign
of God and Jesus in their lives). He reminds them that we all will
suffer different problems but encourages them not to give up. He reminds
them that those of the tough point that those who do not obey the gospel
will be lost. This should sober us and challenge us to pray for the lost
and those who have never heard the gospel or who have heard it and have
not responded.
Prayer: Pray that we as a congregation
will continue to grow in our faith, in our commitment to Jesus and his
purpose, and in our in our community, nation, and world who desperately
need to come to Jesus.
______________________________________________________________________
Day 40 – Scripture and Prayer
Scripture: Psalm 123, 124, 150. These are
psalms of thanksgiving to God for delivering (saving) us. Psalm 150 sums
up the message of the Psalms, praise to God for his great love (steadfast
love – mentioned over 150 times in the Psalms), his great power in
our lives, and simply just for being God.
Prayers: Have people mention how God has
worked on their lives. Have the elders pray and give thanks to God for
his working in the lives of our for the congregation. Have
(minister/Leader) pray for our elders and for their ministry of leading
the congregation as God’s shepherds.
Close by singing and reading the Doxology:
Song: "Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise Father,
Son, and Holy Ghost…" Phil 4:20 "To our God and Father be
glory for ever and ever. Amen." 1 Pet 5:11, "To him be the
dominion for ever and ever. Amen." Jude 1:24, 25,
"Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you
without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing,
25 to the only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be
glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for
ever. Amen."
